Most fish are ectothermic (or cold-blooded). Fish are abundant in most bodies of water. Fish are found in high mountain streams (e.g., char and gudgeon) and in the deepest ocean depths (e.g., gulpers and anglerfish). Food prepared from fish is also called fish, and is an important human food source. Commercial and subsistence fishers "hunt" them in wild fisheries (see fishing) or "farm" them in ponds or in cages in the ocean (see aquaculture). They are also caught by recreational fishers and raised by fishkeepers, and are exhibited in public aquaria. Fish have had a role in culture through the ages, serving as deities, religious symbols, and as the subjects of art, books and movies. From Wikipedia under the

Q. Over the years scientists have noted mature game fish have been getting smaller and smaller in heavily fished areas. When the fish are studied, these smaller fish are found to be the same age as the previously larger fish. Explain why this change may have occured. Asked by i need help fast - Tue Dec 11 01:05:34 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Natural selection. The smaller the fish, the less likelihood that it would get caught. Fishermen do tend to favor bigger game. So the fishermen has routed out the large fish populations leaving the smaller varieties to propagate more. But then there maybe other explanations for this like change in the water composition, temperature, introduction of other biological components, etc... Complete facts has to be collected and presented to arrive at any workable hypothesis. Simply correlating the size of the fish and the extent of fishing practices may lead to conclusions that may be erroneous and misleading. Hope that helps. Cheers. Answered by melchor - Tue Dec 11 01:35:58 2007 Can my fish tank house another fish comfortably and safely? Q. I have a 10 inch /25.4 cm deep fish tank that holds up to 1.66 gallons/ 6.28 liters of water. Right now in the tank, I have one calico fantail goldfish, which is still very small, still a baby. Her mate recently died due to what I think was a swim bladder infection. I want to get another fish for the tank. But would it be safe and comfortable for the fish if I added another? Should I get a bigger tank first? Thanks for helping! Asked by marcellayett - Sat Jan 26 16:02:31 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Whoa. 1.66 gallons is too small for ANY fish, in my opinion, Certainly not a goldfish though there are a number of people who swear a betta would be happy and remain healthy in such a small enclosure. You should look into getting a larger tank asap. Goldfish grow very large and produce a lot of waste. Ammonia accumulates much more quickly in smaller tanks and this may have been what attributed to the early death of your other goldfish. Even in small ammounts, ammonia is deadly to fish. Beneficial bacteria break it down into nitrites (also deadly) and then into nitrates (less harmful), but in small aquariums or tanks it is extremely difficult to maintain this cycle so full water changes are done frequently. This is stressful on the fish… [cont.] Answered by Quiet Tempest - Sat Jan 26 17:03:44 2008 Can fish make friends with other species of fish in a fish tank?
Q. We have a koi and a chinese hifin shark. They look like they could be from the same family but they aren't. But they never leave each other's side. And when the shark was sick, the koi sat by it's side the entire time and even helped to push him to the surface to get food. They nuzzle and cuddle each other all the time.. it's really cute. but i was wondering if anyone else knows about this kind of behavior in fish, or if they have experienced it in their own tanks. Asked by lindsay g - Tue Dec 26 18:46:40 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hey now, fish can and DO make friends! Look at clown loaches. They're incredibly social- so social, in fact, that their interaction with other clown loaches is often crutial to their health! A sole clown loach has been known to 'grey out'- their colors fade, and they become lethargic- when alone. This is actually due to loneliness! They need at least another clown loach in a tank with them to be completely satified. Also, my rainbow shark- which is known to be aggressive and territorial- babies my kuhli loaches. It offers them its cave at night to sleep in, and when the other bigger fish are hogging the food, it chases them away and waits until the kuhlis have had a turn. Fish are remarkably social and intelligent. People just don't… [cont.] Answered by shazam28 - Tue Dec 26 19:05:14 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "fish" |
