A public aquarium (plural: public aquaria or public aquariums) is the aquatic counterpart of a zoo, housing living aquatic species for viewing. Most public aquaria feature tanks larger than those which could be kept by home aquarists, as well as smaller tanks. Since the first public aquariums were built in the mid-1800s, they have become popular and their numbers have increased. Most modern accredited aquaria stress conservation issues and educating the public.

How would you start your own Public Aquarium?
Q. I love fish and creating displays, someday i want to own my own public aquarium for tourists all over the world to visit. But here is my problem, I have no idea about degrees you need or building requirements.. Is as simple as just buying a building and buying big fish tanks and getting wholesale fish? im nor rich or old enough, but i plan too be! If i did open one, it wouldnt be a huge high end billion dollar thing NO WAY im all about suburbs and my biggest tank would probablt be 1,000 gallons

Is there a public transport from San Jose to Monterey Bay Aquarium? If so, what is it and how long?

A. San Jose is 75 minutes from Monterey by car. As mentioned, it is not connected via any of our transit systems. however, you could check into the Monterey Salinas Airbus, which will take you from the San Jose airport to the Monterey Transit Plaza. From there, you could get a taxi or maybe even a bus to the aquarium. It's a round about way to get there, but if you cannot rent a car, it may be the best bet. Check out their website at:

why are public aquariums so bad its not like the ocean is any better...?
Q. like ppl complain that the fish should be set free and stuff, well do you think the ocean is better? always on the run, trying to find food, being hunted down, always on the verge on survival. its prlly like fish heaven. but then again, i could understand some backfires. Like i wouldnt wanna live in the same area for your whole life. Even though i love fish, i still dont like understand that there is like fish restaraunts and stuff in the ocean.lmao

A. For the most part there is nothing wrong with it. The reason why the wild is better for fish is, while it's a much bigger fight for survival in the wild, the environment allows for a greater freedom of living and natural behaviour, especially since some public aquariums set things up for show instead of what the fish need. Regardless of this, fish have proven to do well in captivity and I don't think very many people really have an issue with keeping them as such. Mammals like Dolphins are a different story. Keeping them captive is nothing less than cruel, and significantly shortens their life spans.
