A public aquarium (plural: public aquaria or public aquariums) is the aquatic counterpart of a zoo, housing living aquatic species for viewing. Most public aquaria feature tanks larger than those which could be kept by home aquarists, as well as smaller tanks. Since the first public aquariums were built in the mid-1800s, they have become popular and their numbers have increased. Most modern accredited aquaria stress conservation issues and educating the public.

What is the name of the job title of the person who decides which fish are displayed by a public Aquarium?
Q. The person who looks into the prices and logistics for different fish and water mammals to evaluate the potential to be put on display at a public aquarium.

A. The decision is usually by committee. Generally, this includes representatives of all major departments (husbandry, life support, education, development, and so on). In other words, generally no single person has this authority as there are too many variables to be considered by one individual. That said, the person typically "responsible" for those animals is the "General Curator" or the "Curator of Animals." The specific title varies by institution to some degree. Career research???

What's the best site for news about public aquariums?
Q. I've been searching for a site that keeps up to date with public aquariums, but I have yet to find one. I need one that keeps track of new exhibits, additions, events, anything really, as well as new aquariums being built. This includes marine parks as well. Do you guys know of any?

My toddlers behave poorly only in public, how can I get better control?
Q. At home my two boys (2 & 3) act great. They do what I say and behave appropriately. However, when we go out...my 2 year old goes wild. My three year old never acted as bad (nor does he now) as my current 2 year old. They know the rules, they know what happens when they break them (I'm very consistant), but when we go out it seems they just don't care. They both go 2x a week to a mother's day out and the teachers/leaders always tell me my two are the best behaved, and do exactly as they are told etc. But when I take them somewhere like to the zoo, aquarium, mall playground etc they wont listen, they don't want to sit in the wagon etc. Today we went with a group from our church to the aquarium---and my kids ran all over the place, it was… [cont.]

A. I am sure you are a great mom and your kids are wonderful too. One of the things that I have tried that works well is to remind the kids what the rules are before we go in. I would stop in front of the store and say, "What are the rules?" Try to make the rules positive instead of negative. Instead of "no hiding from mom" I would say, "Mom must be able to see you always." Or instead of "No yelling" we would say "Only use indoor voices." Come up with 3 or 4 rules that cover most things, and make the kids repeat them before you go into someplace. I was amazed that it worked, but it does.
