How do I start a freshwater fish aquarium?
Q. I have a 20 gallon tank. I want to know what you need to set it up. Also I want to know what fish get along with each other. I don't want Tropical Fish. I want to have that one fish that you always see on the glass sucking the algae. What fish get along with that? Do you have a 20 gallon aquarium at home and if you do what fish do you have and what equipment do you have.

A. I have many fish tanks. 2 of which are 20 gallon tanks. but 1 is a saltwater tank. the other is a Tropical Freshwater Tank. I have a Penguin filter with a bio wheel and a heater. The People at the pet store will be able to tell you what to get. In the tank I have 1 rubbernose pleco(suckerfish) 5 different species of gouromis(very beautiful fish) 6 zebra danios, 5 guppies, 12 bloodfin tetras, 5 sharepea tetras, 6 rummy nose tetras(all these fish school and it looks really neat) I did have 3 big gold fish in this tank but they were really big so I put them in our pond. I went and bought a little feeder goldfish to raise. His name is hawk. And I have many snails in this tank. I think that is everything. I don't know if you thought that… [cont.]

A. equipment absolutely needed: bucket. smaller cup or small bucket. necessary chemicals. (dechlorinatior, aquasafe, easybalance) airstones and filter media. equipment that is very useful, cheap, and makes life so much easier: siphon vaccum, algea scrapers (you can use an old credit card for this) use the siphon vaccum to vaccum the left over fish food and waste out of the substrate (Gravel). it's uselfu, because you get the nastys out, plus, it removes the water for you. only do it long enough to take 20% of the water from the tank. then, replace with chemical treated water. do this once a week. very simple. use the algea scraper to get the thicker or green stuff off the glass, and yuo're good to go. make sure that youchange… [cont.]

How can I get a job in a fish aquarium store?
Q. I am passionate about fish keeping and have been doing it for 10 years and I must say that the more I learn the more I learn that I don't know. But I have a passion to own my own aquarium store and want to get a job in one so I can learn how things work. What are some tips someone could give me to get that type of job.Is there any type of schooling I could take or books I could read?

A. Getting a job at a local pet store shouldn't be all that hard. How old are you? If your over 16, just go apply. if you want to have your own store someday, get a business degree. That will really help you run a store because you learn the basics of owning a business. Most people go into business that have no business being there...I live in a tourist town and see that all the time. Just keep expanding on your knowledge.

What are the benefits of having live plants in your fish aquarium?
Q. Just looking to know the benefits of having plants in the aquarium with my fish. I have some oscars. Will I still have to do water changes? What do I need to know and what are the best plants to have? Thanks.
Asked by Anthony - Sun Dec 27 01:31:59 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. None... 90% of the time the plants die and the decaying leaves cause ammonia making tank conditions even worse. you will have to do more changes than less do your research because keeping plants is 10 times harder than keeping fish hence the attraction. you need the right light, co2 level and liquid ferts... if your up for the challenge then go for it...ask anyone with a heavly planted tank the fish in it are the last thing they care about... java ferns, amazon swords and crypts are good beginner plants... your tank will be twice the work not less work... I've been keeping planted tanks for years... its mad science getting the perfect balance of light, co2 and ferts.. one is off and all your grow is one of 6 types of algae...… [cont.]

How do I cycle a new fish aquarium?
Q. I just set up a 29 gal aquarium that I plan on using for goldfish. I wanted to know what I need to put in the water and how long it will take before the water is safe for the fish?
Asked by Ryan - Sat Jul 3 22:50:40 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well the term cycling refers to the nitrogen cycle. It takes at least a few weeks to develop a good bacteria base to be safe for fish. You get this bacteria several ways. you can leave the tank fishless and put food in the tank and allow it to decompose and this will make food for bacteria. you can also buy a couple guppies and leave them in there alone for a month or so and then their waste will help create bacteria. Once the bacteria is created the bacteria will consume harmful products of fish waste and it will help keep the water from becoming toxic.

How big will koi fish grown in a 20gallon fish aquarium?
Q. I have four koi fish that i bought from Wal-Mart about two weeks ago, and I was told that koi fish will grow no matter of the size of the aquarium.
Asked by Miguel - Wed Mar 31 11:21:13 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The fish produce ammonium which is toxic to them, their body will stop growing once there's too much ammonium in the water but their internal organs will continue to grow causing a long and painful death. Koi should never be kept in any aquarium unless it's exeptionally huge, we're talking 300 gallons. The best place for Koi is in a pond.

Asked by Blargh - Sat Jul 26 16:02:42 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Water changes are pretty much the same as in freshwater exept for the salt. You need to condition your tap water to remove chlorine and other things, then mix your salt to a specific gravity of 1.020-1.026 (done with a hydrometer wich is pretty cheap and easy to use) heat, and aerate the water for at least 24 hours and add it to your tank. Cleaning the tank includes scraping algae from the glass, siphoning poop and uneaten food from the ground, and cleaning your tank equiptment wich you will need to know of anyway so i will list them for you: filter, protien skimmer, heater, and decorations. As far as filters I would recomend a large powerfilter for a tank smaller than 40 gallons. And a canister filter for anything larger. In a quarantine… [cont.]

If the water in my fish aquarium gets cloudy?
Q. will the fish think it is going to rain? Should I be concerned about the cloudy water and is there a fix for it?
Asked by (:P) - Tue Mar 4 22:43:27 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. cloudy water isnt good. Could be a sign that you need to change out your filter inserts or most likely you could be over feeding. Excess food in the water settles down into the gravel and then rots, creating a cloudy appearance in the water. Try doing a gravel vacuuming and then feed about 1/2 of what you have been feeding them.

How do I set up my new Fish Aquarium?
Q. Right i have the Tank which is 2ft length. 1 1/2 ft deep and 1 1/2 ft high. I have a thermometer and the light. This is it. Now what do I need to get and do to set up my aquarium for tropical fish. I have read about the cycle but not sure about pumps filters and stuff like that. Please help.
Asked by cookieuk2004 - Mon Apr 20 06:50:14 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Firstly, get your hands on some gravel, I prefer natural colors but that's really a personal choice, the fish don't care. The get a filter that filters about 200-300 GPH and set it up. Put in some fresh tap water and add some de-chlorinator ( Tetra Aquasafe ) Do you have lights? You will need those. If you are keeping tropical fish ( Cichlids, Tetras and Gouramis ) than you will need a heater, set it at 78-81F. Get an air-pump and hook it up, put the air stone in an unnoticeable area. Let the tank run for 2-3 days and let the water clear, the heater get the right temp, the filter get a feel for the water and the bubbler to fully oxygenate the water. After everything is right you can start cycling, do a fishless cycle as it doesn't… [cont.]

Asked by devon g - Fri Dec 29 21:54:05 2006 - - 28 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Whoa!!! Is this an established tank? If it's brand new and hasn't been running very long, then it's a bacterial bloom, it's completely normal. Leave it alone, it will clear on its own. After about oh, 4 or 5 weeks take a sample of your water to a local fish store and let them test it for you. 6 fish may not sound like much, but for example, the more common gouramis can get 4-6 inches, and that's alot for a 10 gallon. If this tank has been running a long time, then you did something to cause a bacterial bloom. Overfeeding, changing filter media, cleaning, it could of been anything. It would be wise to again, have your water tested. See if they recommend leaving it alone or if it needs a partial water change, do that.

When your fish aquarium smells does that mean its time to clean it?

Asked by ` - Thu Jul 17 18:09:59 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The reason why your aquarium smells is because your tank is high in ammonia and nitrates right now. The best thing to do is to conduct a water change between 10-25%, you should never clean your whole tank out, otherwise, you'll have to start the cycling process all over again. You should also have test strips for PH, Ammonia, and nitrates. This will help you keep the levels under control. A weekly water change of 10-15% should be conducted each week, and a 25% water change once a month. This helps in keeping the Ammonia levels and the nitrate levels under control. Also, High Ammonia and nitrates can KILL all of your fishes, so it'll be best to do that right now. Using water conditioners will help as well, because that helps dechlorinize… [cont.]

A. when you have no light and sun light to the tank and still you have green water the only thing that you have to consider is that you had ammonia came from fish waste and uneaten food .Now ammonia is changing into nutrites and it helps the grow of algae .just clean the tank and do 1/3 water change and keep regular water changes of 1/4 in every 3-4 weeks and you will have a health and crystal water tank

Where are some great pet stores specializing in fish, aquatics and supplies in the Houston area?
Q. I'm looking for some great pet stores (family owned, locally owned, small chains) that specialize in fish, aquariums and supplies. I love all fish, but I have only dealt with freshwater. I live in Baytown, but it doesn't matter which side of Houston it's on. I'm just tired of Petco and Petsmart and the little pet shop we have here which is awful. Thanks so much for your help!

A. Let's see, it kind of depends on what you're looking for. I'll list a few of my favorites: Houston Aquarium Warehouse in Stafford is a great place for discus and many other harder to find fish suitable for planted aquariums like rams, apistogrammas, tetras and small exotic plecos. Xtreme Fish and Pets off of Bellaire has really good prices on live stock and dry goods. When the owner starts noticing that you're a regular, he may start giving you random discounts. Great place for odd balls, you really don't know whats going to be in the store week to week. While you're in the area, might as well stop by City Pets off of Beechnut. They also have great prices and a lot of supplies for planted aquariums and are a distributor for ADA… [cont.]

Can my orange tetras live with a feeder fish?
Q. Hello. I have 2 small orange tetras in my small fish aquarium (the aquarium that comes as a set, with a filter, light, and air pump). I also purchased a feeder fish (i don't know what kind of fish it is, i just got it for 10 cents at the local Petco) and put it in the tank. I noticed today, that the feeder fish keeps on chasing on my orange tetras around. I don't know if they are playing, or if the feeder fish is chasing them, trying to scare them. are feeder fish normally aggressive? what should i do?
Asked by madluv4tai - Mon Jul 23 12:56:03 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your feeders are probably either small goldfish, rosy red minnows or guppies. The only one of these that would be able to live comfortably with the tetras would be the guppies, not for reasons of aggressiveness, though, but because they should be kept in different water temperatures. Tetras are a tropical species, and they should have a water temperature of 76-80o, but the rosy reds and the goldfish prefer cooler water in the 65-75o range. Although they might be able to tolerate the range of the other, one of them isn't going to do as well as it could. You should also know that the tetras are a schooling species, so these should be kept in groups of 5+. That's not to say you should go out and buy 3 more and add them right away - if… [cont.]
