Is the removal of a complete bony wisdom tooth more painful than an impacted one?
Q. I am having all four removed. My 2 upper are impacted. The lower left is complete bony and has a cyst around it, the lower right is completely bony and is horizontal. Is it more complicated, and painful for the lower 2?
Asked by Jenny - Fri Feb 22 17:47:04 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I wouldn't exactly use the terms of being more painful. It is going to require more work and usually the removal of more bone to get those teeth out. You should receive pain medication that will help you with post-operative discomfort. Don't forget the ice and keep yourself elevated to help with the swelling! P/S: if you're going to a surgeon relax, this is their job and this is what they do everyday. You're in good hands! Good luck!

what adaptation do bony fish have to compensate for the density of bone?
Q. what adaptation do bony fish have to compensate for the density of bone? What about cartilaginous fishes such as sharks and ray.
Asked by Jason S - Tue Mar 30 17:55:55 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Bony fish have a (relatively) large gas bladder located ventral to their spine. Sharks and rays have a large liver that has neutrally buoyant oils when in motion. However, the weight of their bodies and this neutrally buoyant oil will cause them to slowly sink, which is compensated for by their heterocercal tails (the lower lobe is almost always smaller than the upper lobe, the exceptions being the long and short fin makos, which are designed to move very quickly over long distances, and so need a more efficient propulsion system).

How do you get rid of bony hands and "man knuckles" caused by cracking the knuckles?
Q. I really regret cracking my knuckles. It was the worst thing i could do to my hands...they are bony and my knuckes (when i make a fist) are HUGE. Anyway, my girlfriends all have very pretty, girly delicate hands and mine are huuuge and bony! Who's been there? Is there a cure? Surgery?
Asked by Sasha Pierce - Mon Nov 24 23:21:53 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Talk to your doctor. Depending on how old you are, you still may have a chance. if not, don't worry about it. no one's going to look at your hands, and if they do, they're weird.

A. Sounds like a homework question. I'll get you started. Bony fish are more advanced than cartilaginous fish. B. fish have moving gills so they can stay in one place and make the water pass over their gills. C. Fish have fixed gills so they have to be moving for the water to pass over their gills. B. fish have a swim bladder so they can float at the desired depth. C. fish have no bladder so they will sink if they stop swimming. There ya go--it's a start.

What is a pointy, bony projection in the center of the roof of my mouth?
Q. It appeared immediately after a popsicle stick hit that spot. It was normal before. It doesn't hurt except if I try to drink from a straw, and it has been there now for several years. It is close to an inch long and points to the back of my throat.

A. The center of the maxillary palate is the cartilage of the nasal septum, the area is the mid palatal suture that expands during the growth process. Maxillary tori are usually found bilaterally on either side of the septum and are a bony, smooth, over growth of bone. It may be that you hit this suture area where the bones adjoin with the popsicle stick and you noticed it and have been more conscious of this ridge ever since. Some patients ridges as well as tori's are more prominent than others, this could be why you continue to traumatize yours when you try to drink from a straw. How do I put weight on an ex-racing Thoroughbred? His body is bony and his stomach is big! ?
Q. I recently rescued an ex-racing Thoroughbred, and I am having a very hard time putting weight on him evenly and getting it to stay on. I have never had a Thoroughbred before, and I don't know much about feeding for a specific purpose. I have him on a mixed grain and a high protein pellet. And he has been wormed twice already. Any suggestions?

A. I have 3 ex racehorses and the first thing I do is have their teeth done, fecal to check for parasites and make sure that the wormer I am using hits the mark and then have them evaluated for ulcers. Ulcers could be what is causing the problems you are having. I feed all mine basically the same thing, just the volume differs. They get alfalfa/orchard grass - 2 sections 3 x per day. They are turned out too and then I feed them Equine Senior as it's low sugar/starch which prevents them getting hyped up but it has 14% protein and is high fat. I then add soaked beet pulp and corn oil and mine all look really good and have great coats.

Can hairline fractures cause bony lumps?
Q. I have a funny bony lump above my left ankle bone. I obtained a spiral fracture to my left tibia in March 08 while dry slope skiing but this lump didn't come up until last August. Surely that didn't have anything to do with it??? Also, I bashed my ankle on the steps of the pool while jumping in in the place where the lump is. Is it possible that i may have got a hairline fracture that healed with a weird lump of bone? Thanks.
Asked by Zed - Sun Jan 24 14:45:11 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes it is possible, fractures often heal unevenly with extra bone at the point of healing called callus. Often with the passage of time this is tidied.

A. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. That's the only way to keep your hands from being dry. As for bony, either gain weight, or deal with them. Since you're 11 years old, I wouldn't worry about it that much. You still have some developing to do, which means you WILL gain weight, and your hands WILL change. So give it some time.
