What does it mean when your Goldfish hover over the bubbles from the airstone?
Q. Both of our goldfish hover over the bubble coming from the airstone. They will hang there for several minutes at a time just letting the bubbles hit their belly. Is this common? We have had them for about 1 year & they have just started this behavior within the past 2 months.

A. not much of anything really. Goldfish, although does well in slow moving water also enjoy fountains and turbulant areas as well. The main concern I would look for keep an eye for any parasites. Sometimes fish will find fast moving water in order to rid themselves of built up algaes or parasites. (that doesn't mean they have them) Goldfish are funny fish. Just keep an eye on them.

why does my betta insist on swimming infront of the airstone?
Q. i have an airstone in my tank and i can see he struggles to swim if he goes near it, but he can swim just fine anywhere else in the tank. and before anyone says he doesnt need an airstone he lives with other fish that need it im going to buy something to cover it with. they have a volcano type thing in one of my petshops

A. Maybe he likes the challenge? My betta will swim close to the filter and let it push him around, so maybe it's a thing with them.

Can I use an airstone or bubblewand with sand substrate in my fish tank?
Q. I'm unsure if it would kick up the sand with the bubbles, making the tank cloudy and ruining my filters. I have a 55 gallon tank with a 1/2 inch of CaribSea aquarium sand. Oh sorry, I should have mentioned. It's a freshwater. The only reason I was thinking about an airstone or bubblewand is for looks. I think it look cool.

A. I wouldn't...but that's just me. *If* you're going to anyway, I guess I would suggest placing it in such a way that the actual stone is above your substrate. However---that would look rather silly. :-) What is the main reason you're wanting to put a bubbler in your tank? I'm just curious. I think a better idea would be to get 2 submersible powerheads and place one on each end of the aquarium. This will create current in the water, and increased oxygen, but it won't stir up your sand. Stirring up the sand isn't good, it could damage whatever micro-organisms are trying to make their home in there! =) We *are* talking about a saltwater aquarium, right?

A. oxygen enters the water at the surface where the water is agitated. If you are getting enough agitation with just a filter, then no yo udo not need an airstone. All it does is agitate the surface to get more oxygen in the water, the bubbles themselves just look pretty. If your fish are hanging out at the surface alot, they might not be getting enough oxygen at the lower depths and an air stone might help though.

How poerful should an airpump be to run a 32" long airstone?
Q. 40-60 what? could you be more specific. My current one does 1.3L/MIN (78L/hour) but that only gets bubbles 10cm down the stone.
Asked by Fish Man - Sat Aug 1 17:30:32 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. With my 32" air stone I use a Tetra Whisper Air Pump Rated for 60 gallons and it is more them enough. I wouldn't use anything rated under 30 gallons because 32" is a lot. Also don't worry about getting an air pump with 2 outlets because an air stone is made to evenly distribute air through out it with out air on each end. Good Luck! EDIT: Another thing is that if the air stone hasn't been submerged in water long enough then the air won't won't go through the whole thing. So leave the air stone in water and try it a few hours later.

A. Could you expand on your question, please? What size is your tank, and what types of fish are in there? This will help us in more accurately answering your question. In my tank, I supplement with CO2 for my live plants. Therefore, I stick a little tiny airstone in there sometimes when the lights are off, to even out the gases. My fish are discus, a very skittish and shy fish, and I saw them hanging around next to it with no issues. I used to have a bubble wall, which the rasboras loved, but it made me twitchy and gave the tank a chaotic feel. I hope that helps a bit. :-)

My aquarium's airstone broke. Is it safe to superglue it back together, or will the glue pollute the wate?
Q. I'd leave it to dry completely, obviously.
Asked by Craig - Tue May 18 15:33:27 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It very likely can. Superglue isn't made for submersion in water. It would be best to just purchase another airstone from the pet store. That would be cheaper than replacing the fish!

If I have a 28 inch airstone for my tank, what kind of pump should I get?
Q. I just want to know what size because I got one from topfin that was an xp 30. and it didnt work. I have a 29 gallon tank, so what type of pump should i consider thats powerful enough to push bubbles out of the bubble curtain
Asked by wwe4life1 - Fri Jul 13 18:25:37 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The size of the air pump you need is determined by two things: How much air you want it to push out and how deep the water is at the outlet. These two thing are called volume and head pressure. Also consider this, the deeper the water, the less volume. You will want to read on the boxes or enclosed paper work what the volume is at the depth of your tank and look for several cubic feet per second to make a good amount of bubbles for an airstone that long. I would also suggest you get a pump that will produce at least some airflow at a depth around double that of your tank. This will mean the pump will not wear out as quickly. MM

Bi orb 60 how do i fit a new airstone?
Q. I have a bi orb 60 litres but i think i need to replace the airstone. I have ordered it and hope to get it this week but how do i fit it? Thanks
Asked by sheila g - Sun Oct 7 15:49:20 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. remove the filter by twisting it off, then reach into the tank (better done when doing a partial water change so its not so deep) then just pull the airstone out of the centre. To fit the new one just push it back into the hole it came from. You need to make sure you get the right ones though. They can come in packets of 2, should be about 1.30 ish.

Q. I'm asking because I heard that bettas tend to like calm waters. . .

A. It won't have any detrimental effects on your betta, but with a good filter there should be plenty of oxygen in your water.

Is there a kind of SNAIL, SHRIMP, or FISH that eats the slime coating on a yeast-generated CO2 airstone?
Q. It's killing me to clean the slime coating on the airstone everyday! I have a corycat that likes to "clean" the airstone in the aquarium, but it doesn't seems to eat the slime coating! Is there a kind snail, shrimp, or fish that can eat it???
Asked by Sliver W - Sun Aug 26 16:38:04 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Malayan Live Bearing Snails are ideal. They hide under the gravel all day but come out at night to clean up the rubbish, algae and general detritis that lies in the bottom of your tank. They never touch live plants but eat dead ones. They have added bonus of stirring up the gravel to help your undergravel filters. Just go to a few fish shops, look carefully in the gravel below the surface. If you see a steep conical snail, you have found your MLB. Just ask the dealer, he will normally give you a few for free. Once you have them, you have them for good. if you come to your tanks after the room has been dark for while you will find the whole inner tank covered with MLBs` doing their work. I use these and grow Java Moss. I keep catfish and… [cont.]

can i connect another airstone to my current tube?
Q. i have an airpump and then the tube takes it to the airstone i have in my tank. however i want to put in another airstone (which is more like an ornament airstone)...do i need to purchase a valve or something or a complete new air pump kind regards

A. Get whats called a 'gang valve' It has one inlet from the pump, and several outlets with individual adjustable valves. Now you can adjust the airflow to each airstone or ornament to give them the air flow you want. As long as your pump is big enough it will run several air powered gadgets. Ian

Airstone bubbles into the Filter?
Q. My airstone is directly under the intake of my filter. The filter is making sounds and air bubbles are coming out of the output of the filter. Is that bad?
Asked by Johnny C - Thu Mar 29 13:25:32 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Move the air stone. Its not really bad but if the filter is sucking in large bubbles of air it could be putting unneeded strain on it...and it will wear out much faster than normal.

Should airstones in aquariums be on all day? And which is better, airstone with micro bubbles or large ones?
Q. Just wondering because I am still kind of new to keeping fishes. I have a EHEIM 2128 canister filter that does break the surface.
Asked by MyrKeD - Thu Jul 12 01:23:37 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Air stones don't need to be left on all day, and they are not even needed at all IF you have filtration that breaks the surface of the water (like a hanging power filter or air pump driven filter). If your air stones are the only thing disturbing the surface of the water then you should keep it on at all times. You'll find many experienced fish keepers, including myself, don't use them because they don't like the noise or look of them because the filters do the job. Small bubbles or large, both accomlish the same thing - choose which one you like better.

A. Unless the water doesnt turn green (or brown), cloudy or in any sense dirty atleast for a week then it is perfectly ENOUGH. If it is both chemical & biological filteration, the better. Though you have the best filteration never forget the partial water change for a week or twice. Anyhow oscars survive in the dirty waters too, but they get deficiencies like HITH(hole(s) in the head) looks very bad on the fish.

44 gallon tank w/ 7 discus. 2 cannister filters. do i need a airstone fish are 5 inches to 2 inches?
Q. also how many total discus can i safely put in my tank? also do i need a protein skimmer?
Asked by fryman - Thu Jun 15 14:31:21 2006 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You are fine for the time being, but if they grow much larger you will have to look into aeration. It will also give you the ability to add two or three more discus. Protien skiimers are not necessary as long as you are sure that there is no extra food left in the tank after feeding them and plants would help.
