From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An aquarium (plural aquariums or aquaria) is a vivarium consisting of at least one transparent side in which water-dwelling plants or animals are kept. Fishkeepers use aquaria to keep fish, invertebrates, amphibians, marine mammals, turtles, and aquatic plants. The term combines the Latin root aqua, meaning water, with the suffix -arium, meaning "a place for relating to". An aquarist owns fish or maintains an aquarium, typically constructed of glass or high strength plastic. Cuboid aquaria are also known as fish tanks or simply tanks, while bowl-shaped aquaria are also known as fish bowls. Size can range from a small glass bowl to immense public aquaria. Specialised equipment maintains appropriate water quality and other characteristics suitable for the aquarium's residents. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do I clean the aquarium after the fish dies? Q. My betta fish just died this morning. The aquarium really stinks and I was wondering how do you clean the aquarium. Is there anything that you use to clean? Asked by winnie_pooh_bear28 - Sun Feb 15 17:20:31 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Once you have emptied your tank, get a bucket of hot water and mix it with aquarium salt (or just table salt) and use an algae scrubber pad (both you can get from your pet store) to clean the glass really well. A one-pound box of aquarium salt is very inexpensive. Salt does not change the pH of water. It also does not change the hardness, but it's still best to give the tank a good rinse before introducing new fish. You could also use bleach to sterilize the aquarium and accessories that were in the tank ... just remember that both must be rinsed very well multiple times, and when you fill your tank, ensure you add dechlorinator or chlorine remover (chemical additive that neutralizes chlorine) to ensure all the bleach is removed. … [cont.] Answered by Eddie C - Wed Feb 18 22:39:25 2009 What keeps an aquarium wet dry filter from overflowing? Q. I want to add a wet dry filter to my aquarium, how is the flow regulated? i have a 390 gph pump, how do i get the water coming out at exactly 390gph? Asked by Steven T - Mon Jan 26 12:54:39 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. you do not worry about getting the water out at any flow rate. The water will only flow out as fast as it is pumped in. If you buy a wet dry filter you need a overflow box if your tank does not have a build in overflow. Here is one that includes the overflow. It is a very good value IMO> Answered by Frank M - Mon Jan 26 16:01:57 2009 How to disinfect rocks from the backyard to put into aquarium?
Q. I found some pretty cool stones, and I want to use them in my cichlid aquarium. They're not porous, they're slabs of rock. Right now I have them soaking in boiling water, and a high concentration of aquarium salt. Will they be safe in my aquarium after this? I expect the hot water and salt to kill any microorganisms that may hard my fish. I just hate paying $30 for a dumb rock at the store. How do they prepare their rocks to be aquarium safe? Asked by Leika S - Wed Oct 15 18:46:22 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well you should of poured vinegar on the stones, and if they fizz or bubble that means they are not safe for your aquarium. Once you do the fizz test and the stone is safe then you can just boil it for a few minutes and it should be sterilized, then you should soak the rock in a bucket of old tank water, check the ph after a day, if it is any different from what your tank water is, then it is not safe. Once you test the rock a few times and the ph is stable, then you can rinse it a few times and add it to your tank knowing that it is safe.
